CXL®, an open, coherent, interconnect standard that enables heterogeneous computing, increases memory capacity and bandwidth, and delivers lower latencies, allows for both shared and pooled memory to support the increasing demand for higher capacity and performance in cloud computing and data centers. Building on CXL technology, Montage Technology is excited to be sharing our CXL Memory Expander Controller (MXC) at the upcoming CXL DevCon 2025 event.

CXL 2.0 Use Case: Using Both DDR4 & DDR5 on the Same Server to Allow Memory & Bandwidth Scaling

CXL 2.0 supports the pooling of single and/or multiple logical devices with the help of a CXL switch connected to several Hosts (Root Ports). This feature enables servers to pool resources such as accelerators and/or memory that can be assigned to different servers depending on the workload.

Expanding memory with CXL technology offers transformative advantages for modern data center and AI workloads. By decoupling memory from the processor and enabling memory pooling and tiered memory architectures, CXL significantly improves resource utilization, reduces total cost of ownership (TCO), and supports disaggregated infrastructure. These capabilities allow hyperscalers and enterprise customers to overcome memory bottlenecks, scale AI training efficiently, and meet the demands of next-generation high-performance computing (HPC) environments.

Montage Technology’s Memory eXpander Controller (MXC) showcases interoperability and is featured in CXL’s Integrators List. The MXC is also compliant with DDR4/DDR5 JEDEC standards and supports PCIe® 5.0 speeds – allowing seamless integration of memory modules, add-in cards (AICs), and EDSFF memory modules. This enables the scaling of memory capacity and bandwidth to meet the ever-growing demand for HPC and AI applications.

CXL members are invited to see a demonstration of MXC in person and hear the latest from Montage Technology by visiting our booth in the Exhibitor Hall at CXL DevCon 2025, April 29 to 30 in Santa Clara, CA.
